AND ITS OWNERSThe move to Bearwood
We moved to Bearwood in 2008 and started what turned out to be an extremely long journey of house renovation, rebuilding, repair and extending what was there. In fact, it continues to this day.
At the end of the old paddock, there was a large old tumbledown shed. At first, we used it store building materials and a broken lawnmower. Little did we know that this old shed would eventually be rebuilt (twice) and that it would ultimately turn into something far grander!
Shedding new light
We decided that enough was enough – the shed had to be rebuilt. But we had no money as every last penny was being put towards the house repairs. So reusing the shed’s existing concrete pad, we started the process one panel at a time over several months – a bit of a new wooden wall here, then repairs to the gutters, the plumbing, wiring… Eventually, we were so pleased with what we’d built that we decided to turn it into our new office.
2015 – the old shed’s replacement involved destroying large parts of the garden!
2020 – after the pandemic, the new cabin was reborn. SO much better!
Pandemic. And oak tree
The new grand shed (and now our home office) was all working fine until the storms and high winds at the start of 2020. Unfortunately a large limb of the fine old oak tree behind the Cabin split off and landed on the roof, causing significant damage. This meant that the whole place once again needed paring back to the concrete slab of the original structure. As a result of the first lock-down, the work was delayed a bit. But during the rebuilding processes, we decided to significantly improve the Cabin, including new wiring and smoke detectors, a wood burning stove, a brand new kitchen and shower room, and electric underfloor heating (amongst many other improvements and additions!)
A bit about the owners
Bearwood Cabin is run by me – I’m Melissa. I’d be delighted to welcome you to stay here in Bearwood.
I live in the house at the other end of the old paddock with my husband and my twin sons. The house is over 80 metres away from the Cabin, so we won’t disturb you. In fact, if you want total privacy, that’s absolutely fine. We operate a key box facility so you can let yourself in and out whenever you please.
This picture is from 2015 when we were upgrading the services to the building that is now Bearwood Cabin. The boys are no longer this sweet given that they’re 16 and about to start their A-levels. How time flies…
My husband is a composer and works from his beautiful oak framed music studio next to our house. Mercifully, this is a soundproofed building, so he won’t disturb you.

The orchard
HELP YOURSELF!If you’re lucky enough to be staying with us at the right time of year, please do help yourself to the fruit from the small orchard in the Cabin’s garden.
There are several varieties of apple, greengages, mirabelle, damson, apricot, and pear trees.
The resident cat
VERY FRIENDLYThis is Wazza cat. Of late, she has unhelpfully taken to sleeping in a fruit bowl on our kitchen table, despite the bowl clearly not being anywhere close to big enough.
She’s ever so friendly but if you would prefer not to have her company, we will do our best (though we can’t promise anything!)
Rural & usually peaceful
RURAL LOCATIONBearwood is normally an extremely quiet, very rural location. But we must mention to any townies(!) that, occasionally you will hear animal noises from the neighbouring farm, tractors, farm machinery and so on, particularly during harvest time. Please remember when making your booking that we are in the countryside, and there are often birds, flies, sheep and insects around, not to mention the cat!
